There are plenty of brands that shell out a lot of money for their packaging and still have ordinary packaging. A competitor meanwhile, is spending less and creating an authentic premium box. It’s not about budgets. It is the use to which the money was put. So what’s the difference between luxury and expensive, and why aren’t they synonymous?
Expensive Means Cost. Luxury Means Precision.
Begin with the basic separation. Expensive means cost. Luxury is a customer’s experience. They do not share the same length but do overlap at times.
It’s possible to invest a lot of money in thick board, foil, and a complicated design and end up with something that feels clunky. Another way to spend a moderate amount and create something that feels considered is to take care of the dimensions, construction, and fit inside. The precision is what customers register.
The distinction is that:
- Measure the cost (the amount of money you spent).
- Coherence consistency in the way it was produced.
- Make it a memorable experience for customers.
The materials are purchased with money. The impression is worth every penny. You’re only showing your buyer one of those two.
Tolerances Do the Quiet Work
The manufacturing detail most brands never think about. Tolerance is the deviation of an actual box from the specification.
Tight tolerances mean that all the boxes in the run are almost the same, the lid fits evenly and there is uniformity. Loose tolerances imply that some boxes are good, others are a bit out-of-hand, a lid that is off-center, and a base that is a bit too wide. This can be the same material in both instances. The result is not.
Tolerances decide you’re getting:
- A lid that will fit perfectly on the bottle each time.
- Even fit throughout the entire length of the run.
- Correctly sized corners.
That’s why two boxes constructed from the same board can feel entirely different. Luxury boxes are consistent, not only in terms of their specifications.
Construction Beats Material
Brands will often try to make the box better with an upgraded material even if it didn’t start well. The issue is generally how it was put together.
Check the wrap at the corners to see if it folds together, the evenness of the turn-in and if the board is fully covered at the edges. These are assembly decisions to be made, not material decisions. If the construction of a premium board is substandard, it looks bad compared to careful construction on a modest board.
The quality of construction is evident:
- Even if wrapped at all corners.
- Turn-in at all edges that is consistent.
- No glue or overlap can be seen.
Any box built well with reasonable materials is a better box than any poorly built box with the same materials, so long as expensive materials are used.
Actively listen to others. Respond with confidence.
There’s a style to truly high-quality packaging. It typically fails to do more than what you are expecting.
One was a considered finish rather than four. A single foil detail rather than foil everywhere. Good typography, lots of space, not all panels full. As a packaging material, it is often very costly, and the cost is in fact used to justify certain features. Luxury packaging eliminates those that are not working.
Using restraint appears as:
- 1 or 2 conscious finishes.
- Blank space intentionally left blank.
- Details used sparingly.
It’s simple to add more. It’s the skill of knowing what NOT to do, and it shows.
The Interior is not an Afterthought.
This helps to distinguish the two categories from almost anything else. Expensive packaging can be the end of the road. Luxury packaging is about the contents; the packaging is just the backdrop.
The product is displayed inside, so any bare board, glue showing or a loose product spoil the effect at the most inopportune moment. It’s been promised on the outside and it’s delivered inside with a fitted insert and a finished surface and a product that’s perfectly still.
The interior is important because it provides:
- The unveiling moment itself.
- No changes, stillness, no action.
- Board not raw, but finished surface.
Invest on the outside, and you have a high price box. Complete the inside and you have a luxury one.
The Opening is not a random event, but rather is designed.
In truly-premium packaging, the way the box opens is designed. When packaging is costly, it is typically what the structure produced.
A designed opening is a gradual release that has a slight resistance. It is not sticky, and will not open. That controlled motion is not luck, but a decision that was made regarding the strength of the magnet, tolerance and depth.
Designed opening has the following components:
- Deliberate resistance and release.
- A purposely selected magnet strength.
- The motion that repeats each time.
If it feels good at first, then it won’t feel good on repeat.
Be honest and it will hold you up.
The final difference is more difficult to quantify, but is more easily discerned. Luxury packaging is true to its name, and high cost packaging isn’t always.
Any of these padding tricks to make a box feel full, such as using thick board when it is not required, or loading a box with weight for emphasis will be noticed sooner or later. Packaging registers at the point when it is doing more to look premium than be premium. Luxury boxes instill a sense of luxury rather than create it.
Honest packaging avoids:
- Filler added for bulk.
- Overpowering to appear generous.
- Side effects which have no use.
The honest box will stay intact through repeated handling. A fluffy one is discovered.
Final Thoughts
There’s a difference between luxury and expense, and that’s why a lot of luxury packaging fails to be expensive.
More complex structures, thicker board, more finishes, expense. Luxury is a result of tight tolerances creating uniformity, careful construction, in which wrap and edges are properly treated, restraint that eliminates superfluous, and a thoughtful opening motion.
All of that doesn’t require the biggest budget you can put into it. It means being aware of the exact location of the money issue and its actually not issues. Instead of chasing more features, invest in precision, quality and build your luxury boxes will feel high-end and authentic, not just expensive. That’s the difference that customers feel and feel that they cannot even pin down.
